About Prostate Cancer

The treatment of prostate cancer has advanced greatly over the last 20 years. Prostate cancer is treated today with either surgery, external radiation, radioactive seeds (internal radiation), hormones, or observation. In some cases, patients are treated with a combination of treatments. Making the decision to choose which treatment modality is often difficult for patients and their families. At United Radiation Oncology, we work closely with excellent urologists to help the patient decide which treatment approach would be best on an individual basis. We look closely at several different factors including the Gleason score(the appearance of the cancer cells), PSA blood work, patient's general health, age, social support system, urinary symptoms, and any previous treatment. Despite the new technology and changes in treatment of prostate cancer, we still believe in taking care of patients one at a time.
