United Radiation Oncology is a private practice born out of two physicians' desires to provide cancer patients in the Bluegrass Area with the most modern treatment technology available hand-in-hand with a friendly and compassionate staff.
Drs. Matar and Mendiondo, who together offer more than 45 years of medical and oncology experience, were the first in Lexington to bring a social worker into a private oncology practice, in 1996. Since then, psychosocial evaluation and counseling has become an integral part of their evaluation and treatment philosophy. With nutritional counseling as well, a patient is treated as a whole person.
The first office opened in 2001 and soon became a resource to local patients and physicians. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy was added in 2003, and the first 3D ultrasound unit available in this region for prostate localization was introduced to clinical practice that same year. The success of the practice and the need to bring new technology resulted in the development of our second office on Blazer Parkway, where, for the first time in Kentucky, a Synergy platform functions, incorporating cone beam CT scanning capabilities into a digital accelerator with an advanced beam modulator. The unparalleled accuracy of Image Guided Radiation Therapy(IGRT) and non-invasive stereotactic radioablation of brain and body tumors can now be offered to Central Kentuckians.
Dr. Richard Matter, from William Beaumont Hospital, joined the practice in 2006, bringing 25 years of experience in all adult solid tumors, with a special interest in breast, prostate, lung and head and neck cancers.
Despite these groundbreaking advancements in technology and high quality care, the doctors and staff of United Radiation Oncology continue to treat every patient as though they were the only patient.
